Breeding Practice
We follow the CKC (Canadian Kennel Club, the main governing body of dogs in Canada) Code of Ethics (click here to view) and CKC Member Practices (click here to view). It is important to us that we are accountable to our current and future pet owners and so we like to maintain contact for the lifetime of the dog. This also helps us greatly in our breeding program as many puppies are cute, but the real proof in the pudding is what that pup matures into. We try to screen both puppy and potential owner for the best match and if there is a complication in the future that makes it so that the dog needs to be re-homed, we want to be the first to be there to help.
All of our puppies are sold by contract with a guarantee against any life threatening genetic faults. We believe that a good start is very important to make a well balanced dog. We are there for every delivery and along with their mom's scent; ours is the first scent impression they will have as we greet them into the world. From there, puppies get a mix of ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation) every day as well as preparation for their new homes which involves Puppy Culture methods as well as methods we have found to be successful after nearly two decades of experience. Before puppies leave they have already been microchipped, and have had a full vet check by a qualified licensed vet as well as given all age appropriate puppy shots and deworming. Our puppies stay with us until we feel that they are both physically prepared and mentally prepared for the stresses of leaving their mom and going to their forever home. We want the transition to go as well as possible, so we try to prepare them so that they are already experienced with many of the things that they will see and do (such as nail trimming both with clipper and grinder, hair dryer (including force dryer for when they are at the groomer), brushing, initial starting of pee pad training and crate training, travel). Puppies will have their litter registration with CKC registration. They also come with a free trial of pet insurance through Trupanion. Please note, we are extremely selective about breeding rights and prospective clients must pass our selection process.
Puppies are sent home with a puppy care package which usually includes a toy, a blanket with momma's scent on it to help assure the little one, food, a few peepads, vet records and info on puppy care. If we have extra goodies, we throw those in too! Our puppies come with lifetime support. Any questions you may have, assistance or even pupsitting or rehoming, we want to help.
All of our dogs (pups and breeding dogs) go thru a vet exam and specifically checked for patella luxation, heart health, fontanelle, teeth, and eyes and ears. Our breeding dogs are specifically tested in addition by a certified eye specialist, a vet (generally with a specialty in orthopedics) for knees, and a certified cardiologist to check for healthy hearts. These test results are then sent to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA for short) and this also helps in the continued education and research of the breed for health issues. Above the physical tests, we are also testing DNA through "Embark" to test for any genetic abnormalites, over 200 health conditions, and breed specific health conditions. They also test for traits such as size, nose length, colors, history of the dog's ancestors, and many other interesting things that are valuable to selective breeding. It is our opinion that having both physical tests and DNA testing done, a breeder can provide the best preventative care for future puppies. Especially as there are conditions that are common in pomeranians which may present no symptoms, but the dog can be a carrier for and thus risk puppies getting the condition if bred to another carrier. Physical examinations by themselves will not inform you of these issues. On the other hand, a DNA check will not tell you about the physical conditions that a particular individual may have. This is why for best prevention we choose to do both.
In order to continue improving our breeding program, we participate in showing our dogs. We plan to continue showing and adding more champions into our pedigrees. Our most desired end goal is to continue to produce parti pomeranians that are high enough quality as to give the more traditional oranges in the show ring a run for their money. This is a big challenge due to the problems inherent in other coat colors such as long legs, longer backs and noses and less coat.and also that most parti lines are significantly slower to mature. Also, there are few parti dogs of high enough quality in Canada and even fewer that show due to the leanings to a more traditional, solid color dog (if two dogs are deemed equal, it is the rule to give the win to the solid color dog). Through a careful breeding program, we hope to put more type and quality into our parti program and breed for a dog with all the qualities that our breed standard is looking for in a champion dog without losing the strong bones and amazing temperaments which we pride our dogs for. We believe strongly that a dog can be beautiful, and a champion pedigree can be wonderful - but if the animal is not healthy, or is ill-tempered; that is unacceptable and a heartbreak waiting to happen.
